Approximate the sky width visible from apparent field and magnification.
True Field-of-View Estimator
Approximate the sky width visible from apparent field and magnification.
Approximation only. Equipment design, field stop, adapters, and optical configuration affect the actual field.
What this result means
The quick approximation divides apparent field of view by magnification. Field-stop measurements can provide a more precise result. The result is intentionally labeled as an estimate because a number can be mathematically correct while the input, unit, rule, product, or real-world application is wrong. Keep the entries with the result so another person can reproduce it.
How to use the calculator
- Read every label and unit before entering a value.
- Measure the final item, area, time window, or inventory—not a memory of it.
- Enter the values and save a screenshot or written note of the assumptions.
- Compare the result with the controlling current source.
- Add a practical buffer only when the method and situation support one.
Worked example
A 50-degree apparent field at 30× gives an approximate true field of about 1.67 degrees, useful for comparing a target with a star chart. Change one value at a time to see which assumption has the greatest effect. Do not round until the end unless the current rule says otherwise.
Before relying on the estimate
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Units and final dimensions | A correct formula with mixed or preliminary units gives the wrong plan. |
| Current source or label | Rules, limits, instructions, and conditions can change. |
| Small real-world test | Fit, material, behavior, weather, access, or handling may differ from the model. |
| Stop condition | Know when to revise, pause, or seek qualified help. |
