Estimate capture storage before stacking, edits, and backups.
Astrophotography Storage Planner
Estimate capture storage before stacking, edits, and backups.
Storage estimate only. It does not plan exposure, equipment, electrical safety, site access, or image rights.
What this result means
The planner multiplies files by average megabytes and nights, then converts to gigabytes. The result is intentionally labeled as an estimate because a number can be mathematically correct while the input, unit, rule, product, or real-world application is wrong. Keep the entries with the result so another person can reproduce it.
How to use the calculator
- Read every label and unit before entering a value.
- Measure the final item, area, time window, or inventory—not a memory of it.
- Enter the values and save a screenshot or written note of the assumptions.
- Compare the result with the controlling current source.
- Add a practical buffer only when the method and situation support one.
Worked example
Raw lights are only one part of a workflow; calibration frames, previews, stacked outputs, edits, and backups add storage. Change one value at a time to see which assumption has the greatest effect. Do not round until the end unless the current rule says otherwise.
Before relying on the estimate
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Units and final dimensions | A correct formula with mixed or preliminary units gives the wrong plan. |
| Current source or label | Rules, limits, instructions, and conditions can change. |
| Small real-world test | Fit, material, behavior, weather, access, or handling may differ from the model. |
| Stop condition | Know when to revise, pause, or seek qualified help. |
